Here's a write-up on the Foundation written by the Secretary, Ed Pettigrew:

"The David Pettigrew Memorial Foundation is a non-profit Washington corporation with a mission to promote awareness, safety and education for participants in outdoor recreation and sporting activities, in the mountains and wilderness areas of the Pacific Northwest. The Foundation was formed in memory of David Pettigrew, who died in a snowboarding accident at Alpental Ski Resort in Washington state on December 7, 2005.

David was raised on Mercer Island, Washington and attended the University of Montana, minutes away from his beloved Rock Creek where he spent hours fly-fishing. David did everything with energy, enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed his work, friends, and music. He thrived in the outdoors and was a superb fly-fisherman, skier, snow-boarder and golfer. He was especially adept at Sea-Run Cutthroat and Steelhead fishing on the North Fork of the Stillaquamish and the Tolt rivers in Washington. David was a magnet for people of all types and had literally thousands of friends.

Alpental and Mission Ridge ski resorts in Washington sponsor mountain safety workshops in memory of David. These workshops are given free to the public and are instructed by some of the most qualified and experienced ski patrollers in the Northwest. Over the years, the safety workshops have inspired many skiers and snowboarders in Washington and beyond and have, no doubt, saved lives in the Northwest."
